Toxoplasmosis testing involves looking for antibodies to the parasite Toxoplasma gondii in the blood. Only after being infected by this tiny parasite can your body's natural defense mechanism (immune system) create these antibodies. IgM antibodies are the only kind of antibodies generated by an unborn fetus. The presence of Toxoplasma IgM antibodies in a baby indicates a congenital infection.
